Diy Pet-friendly Home Projects – Make this beautiful dog cage table! A simple way to beautify the dog corner of the house. This project was featured in Better Homes & Gardens, January 2017.

Our dog Buddy was crate trained when we adopted him at age three. His family gave him up for various reasons.

My daughter’s assessment was very correct. There was absolute sweetness in Buddy. Everyone who knew him loved him. He was a bit of a celebrity with my kids’ friends.

How To Build Your Own Diy Dog Stairs

Little known fact about me: I rescued and rehomed 16 dogs (and a pregnant cat + her babies) in 2007.

But none of those dogs were Buddy. It came with a “7 day free trial” which meant he had a lot of issues: separation anxiety, peeing and pooping whenever we left the house (in protest), dominance issues, excessive barking. And…he hates other dogs. It was a puppy mill puppy. And apparently… A friend has decided that home is here with us.

Buddy’s cage was his safe place. He would go there to calm down. His issues were mostly resolved, but he still had separation anxiety. Without the crate, he probably would have hurt himself as he panicked and ran all over the house when we left. Owning a dog is no fun. It comes with a lot more equipment and responsibility than I ever expected. Dogs are really our “children”. So like any kid’s room, I needed a better system when it came to storing Buddy-gear.

We used 1″ x 6″ pine boards for the table top (5 of them) and used a Kreg Jig to join them together. I’ll post a more specific photo so you can see how it’s done.

I then painted the table to give it a durable driftwood finish, using the same method I used on the Restoration Hardware inspired coffee table. I ended up with a water based paint.

We hung tension rods on the underside of the table and then hung coffee curtains on the rods. I found my curtains in the gap and hemmed them with no-sew tape. He likes this setup and rests there quite quietly.
